Custom Hologram Options

Product Overview

A custom hologram image -- where the image and graphics are embedded in the hologram image -- offers the most security to combat counterfeiting.

The video above shows a few custom holograms we have produced which are no longer in use. All of the featured hologram images are also tamper evident (they self destruct when removed).

For added security, we register your custom image with the International Hologram Manufacturer's Association (IHMA) to assure that no other reputable hologram company in the world will inadvertently copy your image.

As a side benefit, the hologram improves the shelf appeal and image of your product. Consumer research indicates that products with holograms have higher perceived quality.

Design Options

When a custom image is required, LidunHologram offers a wide variety of custom holograms ranging from low cost packaging applications to high security images with these types of features:

  • Low resolution dot matrix
  • Security grade dot matrix (800 dpi and higher)
  • 2D/3D
  • 3D model
  • Hybrid - combination of dot matrix and 2D/3D
  • Stereogram
  • Microtext - hidden text readable only with magnification
  • SecureText® - hidden text readable only with high magnification
  • Laser readable object - hidden text readable only with a laser pointer
  • Screen Reveal - hidden text readable only with special filter

Although we can produce a wide variety of hologram types, we recommend dot matrix type holograms. The dot matrix hologram is brighter in all lighting conditions and it has a wider viewing angle, which makes it easier to visually authenticate.

Intended Use of Holograms

Our holograms are designed, tested, and intended for anti-counterfeiting, anti-tampering and promotional applications.

Our holographic products do NOT provide any documented health or medical benefits such as improved balance, sleep, pain-relief, weight loss, smoking cessation, etc.

Our holographic products do NOT provide any documented benefits to improve gas mileage, energy efficiency, cell phone reception, etc.

Our holographic products cannot be programmed to resonate at specific frequencies.

In our opinion, claims of medical benefits or improved machine performance are questionable and scientifically unsupported. Consumers should request an independent study (with blind testing) to verify any such claims and benefits.

We are not aware of any independent studies which validate such claims and benefits. Therefore, we will not intentionally produce holograms for these applications.

Custom Hologram Labels -- Pricing, Timing, & Payment

A) Pricing

A1) Pricing for Initial Order

The initial order is more expensive because you are buying the original custom hologram design, which is a one-time expense.

A typical price for 10,000 silver hologram labels with a security-grade dot matrix custom design and using stock tools is as follows:

  • Custom Hologram (800 dpi dot matrix): $4200 (one-time expense)
  • Tooling charge (.95 inch or smaller): -0- for stock tooling
  • Production Set Up: $800.00/order
  • Labels (.95 inch square or smaller): $.06/label x 10,000 labels = $600.00
  • Total Initial Order: $4200 + 0 + 800 + 600 = $5600. + shipping

However, if this price exceeds your budget, please see our other more affordable options detailed below (option #1 or option #2)

A2) Pricing for Repeat Order

A repeat order for the same 10,000 custom hologram labels is priced at $1400 + shipping. However, if this price exceeds your budget, please see our other more affordable options detailed below (option #1 or option #2).

A3) Price Discounts

The pricing shown above is for a typical order ranging from 100 to 25,000 labels. Pricing discounts apply for higher quantity orders. Please call if you anticpate higher order quantities.

B) No Minimum Order

We can produce affordable custom holograms for small and large orders alike.

C) Custom Size and Shape

A custom size or shape usually adds about $400 to the total price (this is a one-time expense). But we have over 50 stock sizes and shapes, so it is likely you can avoid the cost of custom tooling.

D) Silver Metallic, Colored Metallic, or Transparent

We can produce custom images in silver metallic, colored metallic or transparent configurations. Colored and transparent holograms are priced higher.

E) Tamper Evident

All of our security labels include a tamper evident feature which will self destruct the label when removed. For promotional labels, we can produce without the tamper evident feature, which is priced lower.

F) Fast Service

After you have approved the custom hologram design, it normally takes about 3 weeks to complete the custom labels.

G) Payment Terms

After you approve the custom hologram design, we require payment for the hologram origination and 50% of the labels. On repeat orders, we can consider offering extended payment terms for USA-based customers.

Types of Holograms We Offer

Lower Resolution Dot-Matrix (100 dpi to 400 dpi)

Dot-matrix holograms can be designed to create interesting kinetic effects in the hologram. They are brighter and have a broader viewing angle than other types of holograms. Lower resolution dot-matrix holograms are typically used for packaging applications where eye-popping shelf appeal is desired. The brightness and broader viewing angle are advantageous with the poor lighting or uncertain shelf placement found in retailing locations.

Low resolution can also be appropriate for short run security applications. Or for applications where the casual counterfeiter (local high school student with a new scanner and computer) is the primary security threat.

Security Dot Matrix (800 dpi, 1000 dpi and higher)

All dot-matrix holograms can be designed to create interesting kinetic effects which are brighter and have a broader viewing angle than other types of holograms. Resolution for security grade holograms typically begins at 800 dpi and goes higher. Higher resolution is needed for micro text and other security features. Ultra high resolution (up to 25,000 dpi) are available for special high security applications.

Generally speaking, the higher the resolution, the more expensive it is to produce the master hologram. Also, larger images increase costs as a result of the increase in the number of pixels which must be generated.

2D/3D Holograms

A 2D/3D hologram is a composite of 2-dimensional graphic layers, each set at a different "virtual depth" in the holographic image, Typically, there are 2 or 3 layers, one on the surface, another in the mid-ground and/or background. Each layer is "set into" the hologram at deeper levels. The effect is much like the flat scenery in a theatrical play arranged at different distances from the front of the stage to create the illusion of depth. Another option is to include grid lines, or other conventional 3-dimensional graphic effects to enhance the perception of depth.

Design cost factors include the image complexity, number of color angles and number of layers included in the hologram, . Hologram size is less of a factor in the cost of a 2D/3D hologram, so it is usually economical to produce larger images (up to 6 inch x 6 inch).

2D/3D holograms are not as bright as dot matrix and require stronger, more focused lighting for optimal viewing. The viewing angle for a 2D/3D hologram is also narrower

Hybrid - 2D/3D and Dot-Matrix combined

Combining 2D/3D and dot-matrix methods into a hybrid hologram can be very effective in combining the broader viewing angle and brightness of the dot-matrix hologram, with the "virtual depth" found in the 2D/3D hologram.

3D Model

Generally, 3D model holograms are the most expensive type to create. The process requires a physical model of the intended subject to first be sculpted from plaster or other stable materials at a 1-to -1 size ratio (as an example the VISA Dove hologram was generated from a model @1/2" in size) . The model-making detail, painting and preparation are a large factor in the cost of this type of hologram. When the models are finished, they are "shot" with a laser on an optics table to create the hologram image.

Although this is a more costly and lengthy process, the custom modeling required to produce a 3D hologram adds to the security of the hologram. As with 2D/3D holograms, 3D holograms require strong and focused lighting for optimal viewing and the viewing angle is narrow than dot matrix.

Stereograms

A stereogram can create a 3D effect of an object or show a small "movie clip" action sequence. Using a movable digital camera system for the 3D effect (or a stationary camera for the "movie clip"), the hologram is created from multiple camera views at specific angles. These image frames are overlaid on the final hologram.

The 3D effect is similar to a 3D model hologram, but have the advantage of being scalable. As with 2D/3D holograms, stereograms require strong and focused lighting for optimal viewing and the viewing angle is narrower than dot matrix.

Process to Design and Register a Custom Hologram

Hologram Image Design and Registration

This section describes the typical process to design and register a custom hologram image.

Unfortunately, there is no economical method to prototype a custom hologram design without going through the expense of making the actual image. Of course, that is why holograms are a deterrent to counterfeiting. This limitation presents some challenges in the design process.

To maximize customer satisfaction and ideally get the desired image on the first attempt, we rely on direct communication with the end user. Purchasing agents, distributors, and sales agents sometimes question the need for direct contact, but it is essential to get the decision-maker's direct input unfiltered.

  1. The end user provides black and white artwork of the intended image.
  2. Our designer establishes direct communication with the person who will approve the final design. The customer's personal preferences are often a factor in the design and we need to assure those preferences are not filtered or misinterpreted by a middleman.
  3. We offer a few other design suggestions and prototypes, along with other completed holograms so the customer can visualize the final product. We will guide and consult the customer as much as possible, but the customer makes the final decision.
  4. We validate that your proposed design has not already been registered with the IHMA, which provides an international register of images. This assures we do not inadvertently copy a registered image which is in use somewhere else in the world.
  5. We make the hologram and print a production-grade version to review with the customer.
  6. After the customer approves the final product, we register your image with the IHMA to assure some other reputable holographic company does not copy your image.
  7. We assign the copyright of the image to the end customer (not all hologram companies do this, especially if you don't ask). If the customer is not satisfied with the product or service provided by LidunHologram, he can take his custom image and go to any other holographic company. Without the assigned copyright, the customer would have to pay to have the image created again, should he decide to change holographic vendors.

Summary

We have an excellent track record with the "direct contact" method and registration process outlined above. We also guarantee our work, in that if the design is not up to acceptable standards, we will redo the image at no additional cost.

If the above price for a custom hologram is not in your budget, here are some other options to consider....

Option #1 - Custom Imprinted Stock Hologram Labels
custom hologram

For security hologram labels, our lowest cost option is to purchase a stock hologram label and imprint the label with your custom text or logo. For this product the custom text/logo is printed in colored ink on top of the stock hologram image. We offer over 15 different stock hologram images, 13 stock sizes, and 4 imprint colors. Prices begin at $220 for 1000 labels; additional labels are typically $.06/each.

Click here for more information on this option.

Option #2 - Custom Etched Hologram Images

A lower cost option is to take a stock hologram image and laser etch your company name or logo onto the stock image. This creates a custom image which is embedded and is durable.

This process reduces the cost of the hologram origination from $4200 to only $1500. All other production costs are the same as the custom image.

  • A custom etched design
  • Tamper evident labels
  • Size .75" square or less
  • No serial number
  • No printed inks
  • Typical order quantity = 10,000 labels
Estimates
Custom etched imprint on stock hologram $1,500.00 (one time expense)
Stock tooling (add $400 if custom size) -no charge-
Production set-up charge $800.00 / order
Labels (.95" square or less) $0.06 / label

Actual pricing may vary based on a number of factors including hologam type, additional security features in the master hologram, label construction and material, size, shape, number of printed inks, and total quantity produced.
